Balancing Civil Engineering and Photography: Following Two Passions

When I first picked up a camera, I had no idea it would become such an essential part of my life. Working as a civil engineer by profession and a photographer by passion, I’ve come to realize that balancing these two interests can be both challenging and rewarding. Here’s how I manage to keep photography a part of my life while working in the field of civil engineering.

My journey started with a diploma in civil engineering, which led to over a decade of experience as a Quantity Surveyor. My work is demanding and structured, with strict deadlines and technical requirements. Photography entered my life as an escape—a way to capture the beauty I saw in the world around me, especially here in Mumbai. Slowly, it evolved from a casual interest to a genuine passion, something I looked forward to outside of my work.

The biggest challenge for me has been finding time for photography amidst a busy work schedule. Between managing projects and balancing deadlines, time can feel limited. Here’s how I make it work:

I dedicate part of my weekends to photography. I use this time to explore different areas of Mumbai, looking for new and interesting scenes to capture. I often find inspiration in the vibrant street life here, from bustling markets to quiet alleys.

Having simple goals, like capturing a specific theme or experimenting with a new technique, keeps me motivated. It’s a fun way to track my progress without making photography feel like another “task” on my list.

Balancing two interests has its perks. Photography gives me a creative outlet, something very different from my structured work. It’s also a great way to unwind, especially when work gets hectic. I’ve noticed that having photography as a passion helps me return to work with a fresh perspective.

Plus, photography has introduced me to a new community. Meeting other photographers, either online or around the city, has given me a sense of connection beyond my work circle. It’s inspiring to be around people who share the same creative passion, and it keeps me motivated to keep learning.

Balancing civil engineering and photography has become part of my routine. Each complements the other, keeping me engaged both technically and creatively. While my work as a civil engineer is my career, photography is my passion—a way to capture and celebrate the world around me. If you’re juggling multiple interests, my advice would be to keep it simple, make time for what you love, and let your passions naturally enhance each other.
